THE LAST BIRD

I have come to understand that a kinship exists with all life; we are all connected. My current series of mixed media sculptures, THE LAST BIRD evolved from this belief. Utilizing materials from the earth, terra cotta clay, oxides, applied paint, and twigs sheared from culled trees, I hand build the female forms. Close attention is paid to surface treatment with textures imprinted using only natural objects such as bark, seed pods, or burrs. Support for the sculptures may be created using discarded candelabras or reconstructed found objects.

Gesture is an important aspect I employ to convey an awareness about concerns and consequences; we as humans are stewards of this planet and all its inhabitants. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye. This kinship must be expressed in action, since belief is no longer enough.

Transplanted from New York where I lived and worked as a full time artist, I now reside in South Florida.
